Lalgudi Jayaraman

Lalgudi Jayaraman is perhaps the greatest violist in carnatic music world
today. He is born in a family of musicians who are the direct disciples of
Thygaraja. His father V R Gopala Iyer gave him the first lessons of music..
He inherited the essence of Carnatic music from the atmosphere of his home..
At the early age of 12 he started his musical career as an accompanying violinist
in various musical concerts. He has accompanied such great vocal virtuosos
as Ariyakkudi Sri Ramanuja Iyengar, Semmangudi Sri Srinivasa Iyer, Sri G.
N. Balasubramaniam, Alathur Brothers, Karaikkudi Sambasiva Iyer. The rich
concert experience he thus gained, coupled with the innate talent culminated
in his emergence as a solo violinist of great repute. He has made his mark
also as an unique and extraordinary composer having to his credit several
thillanas and varnams which are a scintillating blend of raga, bhava, rhythm
and lyrical beauty. Lalgudi is also a good vocalist.The most significant contribution
of Lalgudi to Carnatic Music is his Tillanas and Varnams.
Padmashri Lalgudi G. Jayaraman has composed many tana and pada varnams, tillanas
as well as krithis in the Tamil, Telugu and Sanskrit languages. He is also
credited with tuning the famous Swathi Thirunal Thillana: Geethu Dhunikku
Thaka Dheem, in Dhanasri.
