He was born at Kandrakudi village at the Ramanath district of Tamil Nadu
in the year 1816. From early childhood, he was given training in music
and soon he attained mastery in Carnatic music. He was an expert in rendering
rare ragas in rare talas. He started the tradition of composing each pallavi
in a different raga for a raagamaalika. His raagamaalika comprising of
Shankarabharanam, Thodi, Kalyani and Darbar is still very popular. He
has written beautiful varnas also. He was the court musician of Ramanathapuram.
