Dr M Balamurali Krishna


Padmabhushan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna was born on July 6, 1930 at Sankaraguptam, in East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh, to Mangalampalli Pattabhiramayya and Suryakanthamma. His father was a famous flutist and a music teacher and Suryakanthama was a veena player. Balamurali was trained under 'Gayaka Sarvabhauma' Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu. In 1938, at the age of eight, during the Sadguru Arandhana Utsava, held at Vijayawada, Balamurali Krishna gave his maiden concert. His magical voice with perfect control in all three octaves continues to conquer music lovers all over the world even today. He also plays kanjira, mrdangam, viola and violin. He has created new ragas like vallabhi, lavangi, mahati, sumukham, trisakthi, sarvashri, omkari, janasamodini, manorama, rohini, etc and has composer over 400 compositions. His Thillanas are a class apart. He has performed many times in the Kuthiramalika festival and once in the Navarathri mandapam. Some rare compositions of Swathi have been popularized by him, like Saraseeruhanabham – Desakshi, Sree Ramana – Aarabhi. He has also tuned the Hindustani piece Aaj Aaye Shyama Mohan.
