Trivandrum Krishnakumar


Born to Prof. Y. Kalyanasundaram and vocal musician Smt. Sarada Kalyanasundaram on 12th Dec 1973 at Thiruvananthapuram. He is also known by the name Trivandrum Krishnakumar He is married to Binni (M.A., M.Phil -Music) who is also a professional Carnatic musician.
She is popularly known as Binni Krishnakumar in the Carnatic Music arena. Krishna Kumar started learning Carnartic music (vocal) from his mother at the age of eight. He was awarded the cultural talent scholarship for music from the government of India in1986 and thereafter he was under the training of Prof. Neyyanttinkara M. K. Mohanachandran, Former Head of the Department of Music, Government Women's College, Trivandrum. Now he is receiving advance training from the doyen of Carnatic Music - Dr.M. Balamuralikrishna. Krishnakumar is an 'A' Grade artist of the All India Radio and also gives performances on Doordarshan and other private channels in classical music, light classical music and light music. He has been featured in the South zone hook up, National programs and many 'invited audience' special programs of All India Radio & Doordarsan. Krishnakumar has to his credit, more than 500 live concerts.Krishnakumar has directed music for the Light and Sound show -"Samavaakyam" -Directed by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, and has composed music for many music albums that include -Ramayanam - Ezhuthachan's Ramayanam Kilippaattu Sung by Smt.K.S Chithra (BMG Crescendo- Audiotracs), AdhyathmaRamayanam - Ezhuthachan's Adhyathma Ramayanam Kilippaat etc. Among awards won, Cash award from Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna in the competition on Balamurali compositions- 1986, the National Talent Search scholarship for Carnatic music from the Government of India-1986, Cash award in the competition on the compositions of Papanasam Sivan during organised by Sri Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Sabha,Thiruvananthapuram-1988, First prize in the All India Radio Competition in light classical music-1991, First prize in the Sugam Sangeet and Hindustani Classical music competition conducted by the Kerala Hindi Prachar Sabha-1992&93, First prize in the Kerala University Youth festivals for Classical music (1990&1994) and Light music (1991), 'The Best Vocalist Award' from the Indian Fine Arts Society, Chennai, December festival-1997, 'Musiri Subramani Iyer Endowment Award' for the nireval and swaram singing from the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai,December-1997, 'The Chembai Award 1998' conferred by Sri Chembai Memorial Trust, Trivandrum and the Department of Culture, Government of Kerala-1998 and Junior Research Fellowship awarded by the Cultural department of the Government of India - 2000 are worth mentioning.
