Maha Vydyanatha Iyer (1844-1893)



He was born in 1844 at Vayyacheri near Thanjavoor , Tamil nadu. His father Panchanada Iyer was a singer. He studied music, Sanskrit and Tamil from early age. He started giving concerts from the age ten along with his brother Ramaswamy.He had a wonderful voice and people used to praise him as the musician with a divine voice. He could beautifully render rare as well as major ragas. He has contributed many excellent compositions to Carnatic music ; among them the compositions in Janaranjini, sankarabharana and Kamboji are considered as the most perfect. He is believed to have created a 72 Melaragamalika in just seven days. He was a very popular musician in South India and has performed in all the major centers in the south. He followed a very simple life style and used to render songs for all those who wished to listen to him.
